Day 2 (of 10). 10 days. 10 albums that influenced me deeply in the past, but...

that also remain in rotation today. This is even more fun than I thought. So, same era: It's 1985. I had just turned nine when I ventured into the veneer stereo cabinet, pressed to open the glass doors and pulled out this cassette. With my walkman's volume turned up to eleven, I would vacuum the house—one of the chores for my weekly allowance—while belting out every word to every song. (Hearing loss? What hearing loss?) Joel can play multiple instruments, sing beautifully and perform many different styles of music from doo-wop to prog rock, but his greatest talent is his songwriting. As simple as it is profound, he knows how weave his lyrics through haunting melodies that really tug at the heartstrings. My love of the Joel catalog extends well beyond listening. I can passably play more Billy Joel songs on the piano than I can of any other artist. Now that doesn't say much, but it says something. My favorite song? Probably "She's Got a Way" though "Piano Man," it's worth mentioning, is one of those rare cases when an artist's most popular song might also be his best song. My favorite lyric? Impossible to pick one but if you force my hand: You may be right I may be crazy But it just may be a lunatic you're looking for Oh, and I nominate Mr. Nolan Love because not everyone can appreciate my bromance with Billy Joel. ;-)
